Music Minute - Grammy Nominations

The 2011 Grammy nominees were just announced during CBS's Grammy Nominations Concert Live event and with so much amazing music released this past year -- not to mention monster tours -- it's was as competitive as ever.

Eminem is the frontrunner for Grammy gold with ten nominations and country trio Lady Antebellum racked up four.  While stars like Justin Bieber and Miranda Lambert got nods, noticeably absent from the nominations list was 'Tik Tok' star Ke$ha.

World AIDS Day, observed December 1 each year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. It is common to hold memorials to honor persons who have died from HIV/AIDS on this day.

While we still have a long way to go,  some progress has been made in AIDS prevention through raising awareness BUT there is still no cure!! Be responsible and get to know your status! Get tested!! Wrap it up folks! Save yourself and another....

Music Minute - American Music Awards

Ok, I have been falling behind on my updates!! Better late than never but never late is better!! I promise to keep it fresh to the best of my ability.

The American Music Awards came on 2 Sundays ago *pardon my delay* and the entire show was pretty entertaining and well produced!  If you know me by now, you would know that I live for awards shows!!  When the best in entertainment are acknowledged and awarded, you're guaranteed to find me there - at least on tv!  Here are the highlights.

  • Rihanna opened the show with a medley of her current hits.  What she lacks in dancing skills, she more than makes up for with her presence alone! She is gorgeous! Was it just me or did she just do a mini tribute to Africa with the drum/dance bit? The energy was great.
  • Enrique Iglesias came on with Pitbull to perform "I Like It" The performance was great! Very high energy but Enrique needs to step up his fashion game! Pitbull simply upstaged him!  Just because your hot doesn't mean you should disregard all effort.. just saying!  That 'just woken up' look is getting old.
  • Usher nabbed the first award of the night and went on to get another award during the show to give him a total of two.  He performed "DJ's Got Us Falling In Love" which is a hot record! He has had a great year and don't you dare call it a comeback! He never left as he proclaimed!  His litle protege Justin Bieber was the big winner of the night nabbing four of the biggest awards of the night!  This kid has had amazing sales since his debut from being a YouTube sensation.  I must admit I am a 'belieber' Yep, I realize how lame that sounds but we can't deny the fact that the Biebs is a force to be reckoned with! Was touching to see him ask his mentor, Usher, on stage to help accept his award for Artist Of The Year!
  • Pink - I love this woman! She can't do any wrong in my eyes! She performed, "Raise Your Glass" and did it the Pink way!  Granted she wasn't hanging on a trapeze like she did at the Grammys...she's knocked up after all but was still able to deliver a high energy performance! Bravo!
  • Diddy and the dirty money crew - I was confused by the whole thing...
  • Christina Aguilera - we all know this girl has some amazing pipes on her! I was looking forward to seeing her do thing but it was blah for me.
  • The return of the boy bands - New Kids On The Block and The Back Street Boys recently announced that they are going on tour together! Exciting! They closed the show with a medley of their signature hits! I had forgotten how much i used to love the BSB!
Ps: Since I am very late in posting this, no video clips will be available... YouTube can hook that up for you:)

Royal Wedding Fever!!

After what seemed like a very long courtship, Prince William finally proposed to his long time girlfriend, Kate Middleton!! *do I hear a million girls hearts crashing?*  You never stood a chance so take heart in the fact that we are about to witness a royal wedding of epic proportion!  I am very excited about this! When Prince Charles and Diana got married, I was too to young to understand and appreciate any of it but this time I will be seating front and center in my living room enjoying what will be an internationally televised/streamed occasion.  Congrats to the happy couple!

The engagement took place in my home country Kenya! Way to put us on the map Prince William!  He gave her the same ring his father gave to his mum. *sniff...sniff*  I'll let him tell the story....   They are just adorable together!

Music Minute - Kanye West "Runaway" Short Film Premiere

The much-anticipated short film for 'Runaway' by Kanye West premiered last night exclusively on MTV and BET.  There has been a lot of buzz around it and I HAD to tune in to see the spectacle for myself.

To try to describe it, would be an injustice to art.  I would fail miserably!  There was a lot going on!! It was however, visually stunning though it left me confused in some parts.  I feel like whoever was responsible for the concept, creativity etc etc, went overboard with it.  Michael Jackson is still the king of very well executed music videos/short films in my humble opinion.  I wont ramble anymore.  Judge for yourself.

BET or EBT Hip Hop awards?

If you missed the BET Hip Hop awards last night, fret not!  You didn't miss much! Hopefully you spent those 2hrs the show aired doing something meaningful.  Since I put myself through that mess of a show, it's only fair that I share!!  I went in with very low expectations so I don't know why I was surprised at how it turned out. I witnessed too much fuckery going on but here's what stood out for me:

The ugly:
  • Soldier Boy - Yes I get it.  You have a knack of making craptastic music that is hella catchy!  Yes, your music is popular - but real hip hop it is NOT!! The show was an ode to hip hop. To showcase/award the best in hip hop but seriously, the future of that genre seems doomed if you're defining today's era of hip hop! Oh, and what's with the sagging pants?! Hideous!! Somebody get this boy a stylist!
  • Wocka Flocka Flame - Riddle me this.  How did he get a record deal?  Seems like record deals are thrown to anyone with a dream and a mic these days! Does talent not count? There are far more deserving artists who need to get their shine on while he exits stage left!!  Word of advice to you Wocka: when you're allowed on stage to perform, do just that... this was not a meet and greet at the corner store!
The bad:
  •  P. Diddy - Must you be on stage for every perfomance? Including songs you're not featured on?  Sit down somewhere or go kill someone's music career as you've done with all artists affiliated with Bad Boy!
  • Presenters - quit it with the lame jokes.  Just announce the winners and exit the stage please.  Speaking of presenters, why does DJ Khaled always have to scream his announcements?
  • Antoine Dodson - Ok, you were a viral hit with the famous rant heard around the world!  With the funds raised from your rant-turned-song, you moved your fam from the hood.  All good but you're 15 minutes of fame are up. Time to quit trying to stretch them! But then again, BET is to blame for that.  You had to be invited to the event right?   I just wish you could share your hair tips with me because that hair is fierce!!   Now run and tell dat homeboy!!! lol!
  • MC Hammer - I am sucka for comebacks but that performance was lackluster!  His performances used to be very high energy during his prime but it just fizzled this time.  He seemed like he picked those dancers from the audience and threw on matching costumes on them. Better luck next time.
 Finally, the good:

  •  Salt & Pepper receiving the lifetime Hip Hop Award - it's about damn time!! These ladies are truly pioneers in hip hop.  They were trendsetters and their songs remain relevant to date! They still look great and gave good speeches while receiving their awards.  Good look!
  • B.O.B's performance -  We can't deny the boy is talented. He can sing, rap, plays his own instruments and is already a cross-over sensation.  It also doesn't hurt that he looks good:)  In this day and age when most rappers use auto-tune as a crutch, he's doing it as it should be done!  Good job Bobby Ray.
  • Digital Underground's performance:  Was good to see them back on stage and do that tribute to Tupac. Nicely done!
  • Mike Epps as a host - he did have lots of funny moments.

The best:

Undoubtedly, The Cyphers were the BEST parts of the show!  I was looking forward to each and every one but the two below were just dope!!!  Now this is real hip hop!!

Ice cube & sons. Reverend Run and sons.  How cool is that? The legends with their spawn! Amazing! Lil Diggy is definitely going places!!

This right here was just hot!! Good to see men in hip-hop looking dapper! I hope that catches on. Very good look!

Music Minute - Liquor Store Blues

I am in love with Bruno Mars's voice! Ever since I first caught a listen of B.OB's "Nothing On You" featuring him.   He has such a melodious tone to his voice that I wouldn't tire of listening to.  If only he would keep churning the great songs and stay away from that bad coke habit that got him in trouble recently!  Is cocaine the new black?  Seems like everyone is doing it.  Smh!!  Here's his newly released song "Liquor Store Blues" featuring Damien Marley.  Nicely done!

"A Toast To the Douchebags"

Let's talk about last night's MTV Video Music Awards!! There is plenty to say!!
The white carpet was different but nice... I liked the look of it but pity whoever had to clean it up after the fact!

I was really looking forward to watching Chelsea Handler host the show! Apparently, she was the first female host of the VMAs! Huge feat! The problem I had with her last night is that she did not bring the funny that's she's famous for! Her jokes were dry and borderline racist! I love her but I didn't let that cloud my judgment. She bombed as a host! She should be pleased that the Nielsen ratings favored the show! It was the most watched VMAs in 8 years! I still love her show 'Chelsea Lately' and will continue to watch.

Moving onto to the fashion. There were lots of hits and misses but Lady Gaga knows how to steal the damn show! Like she always does! She's always dressed in something outrageous that will have people talking for days! Who else would have the guts to piss off PETA by wearing a get-up made from raw meat including the head accessory of a slab of meat? NOBODY but Gaga. Did you see the hooves she had on at some point in the night?! This woman is an alien with superpowers to be able to walk in those Alexander McQueen bad boys!  She also pretty much swept the awards! She won in every she was nominated she was nominated in! It is clearly her year! And what about Cher? Isn't she like 90? Damn! How does she manage to outshine the younger bitches with that bod? We all need to drink from the fountain of youth that is Cher!
Click here  to see the rest of the fashion.

Onto performances.  Most of them were just so so... Nicki Minaj and Will I Am (in black face, wtf?) fizzled on the pre-show performance. I was left with a blank stare after they were done! Eminem and Rihanna (who should fire whoever styled her) were underwhelming! Lip synching was the order of the night! Justin Beiber did his thing and I must admit that I too have the Beiber fever! He can't do any wrong in my eyes! Mine is a healthy adoration unlike some of the people out there! Usher was amazing in his dance moves but no one could escape the fact that he was lip synching as well. Taylor Swift's much publicized diss/forgiveness song for Kanye was boring and kinda ridiculous! So you were wronged a year ago.. time to get over it!! Urggg....hug it out with Kanye next time and please don't subject our ears to that mess! B.O.B and Hailey from Paramore were ok.
The performance that took the cake for me was Kanye's closing song/rap! OMG! Kanye is many things (pompous, whiny, arrogant, talented, creative etc etc) but that performance left me wondering, was this his way of saying I don't apologize because I am who I am - a douchebag, an asshole, a jerk off! Let's just toast to me and all those like me out there! Hilarious! Some people called it genius. Judge it for yourself...

Documentary Film - A Small Act

As I have mentioned before, I watch a lot of television.  Good and bad!  It's been a while since I have seen anything that made an impression on me until I accidentally stumbled upon a documentary on HBO "A Small Act".  I love HBO's programming but I almost passed on this one.  However, something piqued my attention - it was featuring a Kenyan *go figure!*. Once I started watching, I was completely captivated and couldn't look away!

To say I was moved, would be a huge understatement!  Tears aside {and I cried plenty}, this documentary actually inspired me to make a difference in someone's life! While there were familiar undertones to the story line, the thought that a small gesture can make a difference that is beyond measure made an impact on me!

Gladly, I found out through Facebook, that the documentary has quite a following.   This documentary is a MUST watch!  I hope that it will move you to make a difference like it did me. Spread the word!  You owe to that to the world:) The story is below.

Synopsis: A SMALL ACT is a documentary film which tells an incredible story of hope and redemption. It inspires us to reach beyond the limits of possibility and awakens us to the effect one person can have upon the world. Filmed in the sleepy town of Västerås, Sweden, the bustling city of Geneva, Switzerland and the lush landscape of Kenya's central highlands, A SMALL ACT takes you on the journey of a lifetime.

THE STORY
When Hilde Back sponsored a young, impoverished Kenyan student, she thought nothing of it. She paid roughly $15 dollars per term to keep him in primary school.

She certainly never expected to hear from him, but many years later, she does.

Chris Mburu has been thinking of his “angel” Hilde since he was a boy. The small contribution she made paid off – Chris went all the way to Harvard. Now, he’s a respected UN human rights lawyer, dedicating his life to battling genocide and crimes against humanity.

Chris decides to replicate Hilde’s generosity by starting his own scholarship fund, and he names it after her. This scholarship will educate bright kids in his village so they can also succeed and give back.

But Chris is stunned when Kenya’s public schools start failing, and only two new students qualify for sponsorship. Simultaneously, Kenya falls into ethnic-based election violence. After working on conflicts in neighboring countries, Chris knows that ignorance fuels ethnic hatred. Education has never been more important. Chris must decide what to do.

"Aint that some ...!"

Have you ever had a "Ceelo - Fuck you" moment?
There are so many times I want to just get that fitting green dress, pull up my hair, wear some pearls, call my girlfriends(a la DreamGirls) and do a chorus of "F*ck you!)

Ha!

You know what am talking about! That pesky one person that drives you up a wall.
It could be an Ex, a bad boss, a jealous relative or just some plain 'ol party-poopers!
As soon as I saw this video, I knew it would be a banger, I like the old school vibe and the throwback to Outkast's Hey Ya or Roses.

iLike *wink*

This song will be a soundtrack to talk-to-the-hand moments that will now pop up, if someone refuses to give you your 10s! Simply tell 'em "Fuck you" with a swipe of your finger under your chin *wink*

Busted!!

Well, well, well!! Seems like some people can't stay out of trouble! TI is back in the clink!  Doesn't it seem like he was just released from jail?
T.I. and his wife Ms. Piggy Tameka "Tiny" Cottle were arrested late last night for possession of a controlled substance.

The couple got in trouble during a traffic stop when cops smelled marijuana coming from their car.
TMZ now reports that they were in pocession of Ecstasy and Meth!

T.I. is currently on a three-year probation after being charged and jailed in 2008 for unlawfully possessing firearms as a convicted felon.

Seriously TI, you have everything going for you right now; recently married, you have the number one movie (Takers) in the country, working on a new album etc etc.  Can't you just get it together? Partake in that 'stuff' at home if you must!!   Smh!
Waiting on that statement from their camp....let's see how they spin this!

Emmy Fashion - The High Notes

I watched the Emmy Awards last Sunday and enjoyed some parts.  I LOVE television and I may be described as a couch potato but I prefer TV enthusiast! Name a show, and chances are I have seen it! Naturally, I had to tune in to watch the best of the best in television get honored. My shows Mad Men, Modern Family got top honors *yaay!* but I was bummed that True Blood didn't win the top awards:(
Besides staying glued to the tube rooting for my favorite shows, I enjoy greatly the fashion showcase on the red carpet by the stars!  Most of them did not disappoint!  Below are a few of the highlights for me:

Kim Kardashian looked like Grecian goddess!  The best she's ever looked. She hit all the high notes!

Heidi Klum in the very short yet ultra sexy dress. Great accessories and fab shoes!!

Maria Menounos showing off her best asset in a dress that was made for her body!

The fab couple Nicole Ari Parker & Boris Kodjoe

It's A New Dawn! Progress...

Finally some good news!!
Kenya will change forever. President Mwai Kibaki received, read and signed the legal instruments, proclaiming the new constitution into law early yesterday.
It was a culmination of 20 years of a stop-and-go review process, which started in the late 1980s and gathered steam in the early 1990s. The signing took place in a big ceremony at the historic Uhuru Park in central Nairobi.
Immediately the President publicly read and signed the Instruments of Promulgation of the new Constitution, the country was radically restructured, bringing to an end 47 years of post-independence history and setting it on a new course.  A cause to celebrate!!

The video below also seems fitting...

At the movies...

TGIF!!

Are you going to the movies this weekend? What do you plan on watching?  There are a few new movies that opened today. The one with the most buzz is Takers! With an all star cast bunch of C-list movie stars consisting of Matt Dillon, Hayden Christensen, Idris Elba, Michael Ealy, Tip Harris, Chris Brown, etc, it is sure to be a big draw at the box office.  Unless The has-beens Expendables holds up strong for a third week in a row.  Maybe I should really go see what all the hype is about in that action flick!

Strictly for my amusement, I always check out movie reviews! Criticts are just that, critics! They are there to find fault.  They hardly sway my decision to watch a movie because i would rather form my own opinion.  Here are some gems from my favorite critics on Takers;

"The Italian Heat Job for Dummies"  Lol!
"Attempts at Quentin Tarantino-esque artiness go overboard."  *frown*

You get the gist of it.  Overall, the movie was panned by the critics but that has never stopped anyone.  Will you go see it?  Looking forward to getting 'real' people's feedback!

*Update: Saw it and it came up a little short for me! No particular actor stole the show.  Congrats on opening up number one despite showing in less theaters than The Last Exorcism.

African Pride: Pageant Life

Did you catch the 2010 Miss Universe pageant that aired live last night on NBC?  The pageant is one of the most publicized beauty contests in the world with 600 million viewers worldwide.

For years, each Miss Universe contestant has had to portray a very wholesome yet likeable image, talk about promoting world peace, have a great desire to participate in various charitable organizations to make the world a better place.... blah blah blah!!

Times have changed! What a difference a few years make!  While there are strict rules that still apply, the pageant's image has changed. The promo pics for the contestants this year caused a lot of controversy.  For 2010's Miss Universe promo shots, each contestant was to wear body paint. The competition got a little risque when the women were allowed to go topless in the photos.  There was no real nudity other than seeing the ladies backs.  Fox 411 claimed that the competition has sunk to a "new low" by emulating Playboy for posing topless with body paint. Really Fox?  Get off your high moral horse!!  Do you live in 2010?  I don't have to look too far to find some type of nudity from various outlets!
Here are some of the 'highly' controversial images!

Congratulations to Mexico's Jimena Navarette who was crowned this year's winner in Las Vegas, Nevada.    Congratulations also go out to South Africa's Nicole Flint for making it into the top ten.

TV Land: Just for laughs

South Park is an American animated sitcom created by Matt Stone and Trey Parker for Comedy Central (if you didn't already know that!) The show has become infamous for its crude, surreal, satirical, and dark humor that covers a wide range of topics.  I must admit, I'm a HUGE fan of South Park much to the disappointment of the people in my inner circle! Why can't they just see how funny the show really is and stop taking offense?  There's a reason why the show remains Comedy Central's highest rated and longest running program.

One of the classic episodes from South Park is the Starvin' Marvin episode. In the episode, Cartman, Kenny, Kyle and Stan send money to an African charity hoping to get a sports watch, but are instead sent an Ethiopian child whom they dub Starvin' Marvin.  Hilarity ensues!

Music Minute - P Square (No Easy)

Just because it's that kind of night....party responsibly folks!!

*The great message in the song is outweighed by the flashy video - enjoy it nonetheless!

Your Daily Dose Of Eye Candy

Featured Actor: Van Vicker (Liberian-Ghanaian)

Van Vicker is an actor in the Ghana Film Industry who is usually cast as the male romantic lead in films, often alongside actresses Jackie Aygemang and Nadia Buari. He is of Liberian-Ghanaian descent.

I had tried to fight the force that is the "Nollywood" movement (Nigerian movies to the rest of the world) but I lost the fight and found myself enjoying the movies tremendously! I just love how melodramatic the characters become, the snickering, sneers etc etc but I do dislike the fact that some  long drawn out scenes! I mean, do we really have to watch every bit of detail leading up to a great scene? Some scenes can be left on the cutting room floor! *I digress* These movies are a guilty pleasure for me.

Here are some more pictures of Africa's own sensational actor, Van Vicker.

This may be a self-serving purpose because my bestie and I had the pleasure of meeting the actor recently and I must say he was very pleasant and gracious!!  Eat your hearts out ladies!

Van Vicker and yours truly!!
