Awareness - Martin Luther King Day

Today, we commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day.  It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around the time of King's birthday, January 15.

Dr. King was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed on January 20, 1986.

Dr. King was an American clergyman, activist, and prominent leader in the African American civil rights movement.  He is best known for being an iconic figure in the advancement of civil rights in the United States and around the world, using nonviolent methods following the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi.  King is often presented as a heroic leader in the history of modern American liberalism.

Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee.

TV Minute - Golden Globe Awards Recap

The 68th annual Golden Globe Awards was the first award show to come out the gate this award season!! This  is exciting for a lot of people who may not be directly involved with the shows/films - TV enthusiasts, film lovers, fashionistas etc etc.  There's something for everyone.

The Golden Globe Awards are a celebration of the best in TV/Movies by the Hollywood Foreign Press who determine the winners.  The show takes place in a very casual banquet style setting and alcoholic drinks are served at the guests pleasure!!  This makes for tipsy/drunken speeches from the winning parties. Exciting eh?

Ricky Gervias was the host of the evening for the second year in a row!!  He is the creator of the tv show The Office.  While he is funny, some critics always bash his style and categorize it as verbal rampage! I guess English humor/bold banter is not for everyone.  I particularly enjoyed his honesty!! No one was safe!!

Glee and Social Network won big last night!!  I am a Gleek and was pretty pleased by that!!  I am also glad that i got to see Social Network recently.  It is a great movie that critics and fans love.  The awards were much deserved!

Newcomer, HBO's Boardwalk Empire also made an impact! They beat out a clear favorite, Mad Men, in the Best Television Series - Drama, and the Best Actor in a Television Series Category respectively.
In A Better World won for Best Foreign Language film! I just found out the movie was partly shot in Kenya and I personally know some of the cast members!  Kudos guys! Enjoy the road to the Oscars!

Robert De Niro was the recipient of the Cecile B. DeMille Award.  He has had an amazing acting career and has a great roaster of work - Little Fockers notwithstanding!

For a full list of nominees and winners click here.

Fashionistas can rejoice!!  There was a a lot to look at on the red carpet! There were amazing gowns, jewelery and shoes!  I couldn't help but feast my eyes!  But with the good, comes the bad!  Some of the gowns we saw should have been left on the rack!!  Helena Bonham Carter always turns up the crazy! I have to give her credit for consistently giving us crappy outfits - she topped it by wearing two different colored pair of shoes! Here's the good, the bad and plain ugly on the red carpet.

The countdown to the Oscars begins....

Quotable Quotes

"The one important thing I have learned over the years is the difference between taking one's work seriously and taking one's self seriously. The first is imperative, the second is disastrous."

While you were sleeping...

Ok, so Pluto was demoted as a planet a little while ago and now thanks to the Earth's movement, your astrological sign may have changed.  Oh, the horror!!  I feel like I just found out that I am adopted! What is else have I been misguided on through out my life?

The internet has buzzing with the news that the zodiac has been rearranged.  A sign has been added to the list of 12 astrological signs we've been used to, stated the Christian Science Monitor. "Ophiuchus," the added sign is said to be a formation the ancient Babylonians discarded because they wanted 12 star signs, not 13.

Ophiuchus is for those whose birthdays fall on Nov. 29-Dec. 17

Here are the "real" dates of astrological signs, according to astronomers:

Capricorn: Jan. 20-Feb. 16.
Aquarius: Feb. 16-March 11.
Pisces: March 11-April 18.
Aries: April 18-May 13.
Taurus: May 13-June 21.
Gemini: June 21-July 20.
Cancer: July 20-Aug. 10.
Leo: Aug. 10-Sept. 16.
Virgo: Sept. 16-Oct. 30.
Libra: Oct. 30-Nov. 23.
Scorpio: Nov. 23-29.
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29-Dec. 17.
Sagittarius: Dec. 17-Jan. 20.

This means that I am now a Taurus!!  I am true Gemini thus speak my traits.  I reject this change!!

TV Recap: BET's The Game

Like many of you, I was very excited about the return of the tv show The Game last night.  The show has had quite the following since it's debut on the CW network.  It came as a shock to many when the show got cancelled after three very successful seasons:(  Luckily, for everyone (actors, writers, producers and fans alike), the show was picked up by BET and they kept the same cast, production and writing team.

BET scored a major ratings victory last night with the premiere of scripted series The Game, which drew 7.7 million viewers — the network’s biggest audience for a scripted series debut.
The African-American targeted network produced the fourth season of The Game – which follows the lives and relationships of players on a fictional pro-football team.

I was keeping up with the show while checking out Twitter and Facebook for updates and to my surprise, The Game was the leading trending topic in the United States!  The fans were going in on the show sharing their opinion!
The show's story line started of two years later since we last met the cast.  Was it just me, or did it feel like there was a lack continuity since the last season? For instance;
  • Why did Melanie wait two years to administer the paternity test?
  • Why and when did Malik become so mean especially towards TT? What transpired between them?
  • Why was Kelly still extremely bitter towards Jason?  Time is meant to heal but it appeared that after two years, she was still harboring ill feelings.  And that reality show...don't get me started!
  • Why was Brit Brat so much older?  The new one is about 15yrs old & too rude for school! Not believable.
  • Terrence from 106th & Park as the new and much younger love interest for Tasha Mack! He was not believable! Bring back Rick Fox!
There was a resounding sense of disappointment from the fans! I felt the writers crammed too much into the first show.  I hope the show will get better and keeps fans as interested as we have been since the show's debut.

Entertainment Roundup....

Happy New Year cyberville!  I hope the year has started out great for you!
Here's the run-down on entertainment this week;

  • Inspirational Minute - I am sure by now you've heard about Ted Williams - unless you have been living under a rock ( I kid, I kid!).  He is the homeless man with the golden voice who was discovered on the side of the road and is now the most sought after person to appear on shows/do voice over work etc etc thanks to the little thing known as YouTube & it's viral media success!! If his story doesn't move you, your heart must consist of coal! Here's to second chances! Check it out here:

  • The People's Choice Awards - It was the first award show of the year and I was trying really hard  to like it but it didn't excite me much.  Queen Latifah was the host for the umpteenth time! She did a great job as she always does and couldn't look more amazing!  For a list of winners, click here.   For the red carpet looks, see below;

  • TI got beat and it got him in trouble - so our beloved self proclaimed King of the south got a frisky lil visit from his wife TinyIt is reported that
during a trip to the Arkansas State Prison last weekend, T.I. wife's Tiny obviously couldn't resist the sight of her hubby in a hot orange jumpsuit.  In the middle of the visiting room, during regular hours, Tiny took T.I. in the palm of her hands and literally went to work.
According to prison guidelines, inmates are allowed to kiss and embrace at the beginning and at the end of a visit as well as hold hands...but it stops there.  And "the inmate’s hands must remain in plain view of Visiting Room staff at all times."  But I guess now they have to add "inmate's partner's hands" to that statement. T.I.P. was immediately reprimanded and sent to a "Special Housing Unit" which has more security and less freedom.
Wow! Look ma! No hands! I am not even mad at them... afterall they are a married couple.

    • A bit of a shocker - Snooki from that mess of show that is ratings gold *rolls eyes*, Jersey Shore is now an author!! Really?  Did she use a ghost writer? Who would want to read her book? On second thoughts, there's always an audience or somebody interested! Make that money honey.

    • Music Minute - Katy Perry leads the billboard Hot 100 this week with her hit Firework.  My favorite vocalist of the moment, Bruno Mars is hot on her heels with his song "Grenade".  It is such a beautiful song!  To see the top ten artists who made the list, click here.
    • Box Office ReportHere goes...click here for the top ten movies this week.
